A recent swathe of negative press coverage has somewhat enveloped the Umbrella Company industry in the past couple of weeks. First up, the Union of Construction, Allied Trades And Technicians (UCATT) have further vocalised their entrenched reservations about umbrella companies. Their fundamental argument has been to debate what they see as unfair business practices carried out towards contractors by umbrella operators.

As the long nights get a little shorter, the sun isn’t ready to set on the good news for the UK’s contracting community. According to market analysis across the finance, accounting and IT sectors, the second half of 2014 is set-up for a great finish to a positive year.

Many people that become contractors fall into it. They may be looking for a job through a recruitment agency and the only positions available are temporary contracts. Others it is a long term career choice.

A recent survey by PeopleperHour, an online business that helps match freelancers to very short term jobs or tasks, claims to have found that 58% of new freelance positions were being won by women.

A recent CBI / PwC survey into the health of the UK’s financial services sector has revealed a mainly positive outlook coming into the 2nd half of 2014. There were over 90 firms interviewed, with a vast majority predicting a steady increase in business volumes, increases in profitability and subsequent rise in new hire opportunities.
