We're recruiting across the board here at Umbrella Accountants and consequently I'm getting to read a lot of CV's. Some of them are clearly refined by efficient recruiters and then there are others telling me about how they spent 2 weeks on a paper round in 1983 as part of their 20 year career in accounting.

One thing that does appear on both direct CV's and those from a recruiter are those boilerplate phrases that are repeated so often they mean absolutely nothing. You know, just like the most standard one that appears in almost every CV and is in the title of this post. Others you may see far too often are "I am conscientious, hardworking and trustworthy", the amazing revelation that someone "Works well under pressure" or posesses that most rarest of skills - "can communicate at all levels".

Umbrella Accountants has recruited four young apprentices from local colleges to help the company capitalise on growth and boost the digital arm of its business.

Benjamin Smallman, 16; Sheraz Sheikh, 18; Liam Parker, 19; and Nicola Worthington, 23; have all joined Umbrella in training roles over the last couple of months.

In addition to their college accountancy course, which they attend one day per week, the group gains practical experience of everyday working life at Umbrella Accountants.

Umbrella Accountants are delighted to report that having hit some pretty tight objectives and demonstrated the relevant abilities and attitude to their work we have promoted a number of staff members in the last week.

As a result of these promotions we are looking to bring in two Assistant Accountants. If you know someone who has just completed an accounting degree or are currently studying their AAT then put them in touch with Neil Armitage the Operations Director neil.armitage@umbrella.co.uk for a chance to work somewhere where hard work and the right attitude pays off.

2015 has seen some eye-catching headlines regarding the UK’s IT industry. Bold proclamations such as projections that London will trump Silicon Valley as the world’s tech capital within the next ten years, the growth of tech ‘clusters’ across Britain from Newcastle to Bristol, and the 65% jump in the number of new tech companies being registered in the UK.

If you have more than one unexplained transaction related to the same category on your FreeAgent portal, you can explain these in one go by clicking on the ‘more options’ tab and tick the relevant transactions.  For instance if you have bought a number of train tickets you can quickly allocate all of those transactions to travel costs in a few clicks.

Umbrella.co.uk have today launched our new Umbrella Logo with the strapline:

This change has been made to reflect that we offer more than just a contractor umbrella company or limited company accountancy services to contractors and freelancers.

Did you, like many others, have to run the mad dash to get your tax return finished over the weekend?

HMRC estimates that around six per cent of tax returns are filed on the 31 January deadline day each year. For those leaving it to the last minute, HMRC’s online filing system can be slower than normal and the automatic £100 penalty for late filing is a constant threat.

How can you avoid this deadline day rush in years to come? Here are our top five tips for a stress-free 2016-17 tax year.

Neil Armitage, Operations Director, Umbrella.co.uk commented, “Raising money for a worthy cause is always something we’ve done at Umbrella.co.uk but when the opportunity came up to run through a massive bubble wall with my 9 year old daughter I jumped at the chance! Myself, Sarah Kinder and Louisa Lockton all took members of our family and had a brilliant time running through the bubbles and my daughter has already asked if we can do it again next year.

I almost feel guilty for having so much fun as I thought you were supposed to carry out some form of endurance event to raise money for charity but this was a day that everyone enjoyed thoroughly and pushed us towards almost a £1,000 total for our chosen charity”
