Support for your journey

Understanding the mental health challenges of contracting

Contracting can be incredibly rewarding—flexible hours, autonomy, and higher earning potential. But for many contractors, working solo can also lead to periods of isolation, uncertainty, and stress. At Umbrella.co.uk, we understand the unique pressures faced by contractors and are committed to providing dedicated mental health and wellbeing support to help you thrive both professionally and personally.

Access to mental health resources

Through our partnership with Health Assured, all Umbrella.co.uk contractors gain free access to our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP). This confidential support service offers:

24/7 Telephone Counselling

Confidential emotional and practical support is available around the clock, giving you immediate access to professional guidance whenever you need it.

Online and Face-to-Face Sessions

Where clinically appropriate, counselling sessions can be delivered in the way that works best for you—either virtually or in person.

Easy Access Support

You can reach out via the Health Assured app or call 0800 047 4097 to speak directly with a trained advisor, anytime.

Wisdom AI Wellbeing Tool

Get instant answers to your mental health and wellbeing questions using the AI-powered support tool, available 24/7 through the Health Assured portal.

We work hard to foster a culture that promotes openness and inclusion, regardless of your role or location. Contractors are encouraged to raise concerns, speak with their Client Manager, or reach out to our Customer Service team if they feel overwhelmed, anxious, or affected by personal issues. Everything is handled with complete confidentiality.

In particular, our Menopause Policy reflects our commitment to supporting health issues often overlooked in the workplace. Whether physical or emotional symptoms are impacting your ability to work, we urge affected contractors to speak to a Director, HR, or the EAP to receive appropriate support and adjustments.

Dignity and Respect for Every Contractor

Our Equality, Inclusion and Diversity Policy ensures that every Umbrella.co.uk contractor is treated with dignity and respect—regardless of gender, race, religion, disability, or health status. This commitment extends to your mental wellbeing. Bullying, intimidation, or harassment is not tolerated in any form. If you feel unsafe or unfairly treated, we urge you to report this to your Client Manager immediately.

Self-Care While Contracting

In addition to the resources we offer, here are some simple ways to protect your mental health while contracting:

Stay connected

Schedule regular catch-ups with peers or attend networking events.

Keep structure

Set consistent working hours and include breaks.

Move daily

Physical activity is proven to reduce stress and improve focus.

Know your triggers

If invoicing, IR35, or project uncertainty is affecting you, reach out—we’re here to help.

Make time for wellbeing

Whether it’s meditation, a podcast, or a walk, build habits that nourish your mental health.

Prioritising your wellbeing

Mental health is as important as physical health, and it’s crucial to know you have support systems in place—even when you’re self-employed. Umbrella.co.uk is here to help you maintain a balanced, healthy working life, with practical tools and compassionate advice available when you need them.
