UK workers seek out extra casual work

Jobs website Indeed has reported a significant increase in the number of workers seeking out additional part time and casual work to cope with the cost of living crisis.

The recruitment platform found that searches for ‘weekend only’ work and ‘night shift part-time’ jobs were up 120% and 110% respectively in the three months to January 2023.

The data also showed a surge in searches for low-skilled jobs, with searches for 'warehouse part-time' increasing by 252% and 'retail part-time' increasing by 124%.

Miles Grady, Director of Umbrella.co.uk, said: “Indeed’s findings suggest that more British workers are looking for flexible, part-time work that they can carry out alongside their existing commitments.

“Indeed also found a huge increase in demand for roles with ‘weekly pay’ - suggesting that regular pay is key for some people during the cost of living crisis.

“If you’re seeking additional flexibility in your work hours and reliable payments, I would highly recommend looking at opportunities available through an umbrella company. Working with an umbrella can help you find what you’re looking for when it comes to work arrangements and pay.”

Frank Douglas, CEO of HR consultancy Caerus, said the Indeed results were disappointing and indicated that wages need to rise.

Speaking to HR magazine, he said: “It is another indication that wages are not keeping pace with the fastest rate of increase for the cost of living in 40 years.”

This was emphasised by Katherine Chapman, director of the Living Wage Foundation. She said: “As inflation soars, workers and families are being forced to make expensive last-minute childcare arrangements because of changing shifts or choose between basic needs like heating and eating because of pay that can’t cover rising costs.

“Now more than ever, employers who can must commit to paying a real Living Wage that can provide for everyday needs along with secure and reliable Living Hours.”
